Plastic Trap - Mixed media art installation

Plastic waste is a major cause of pollution and environmental degradation. India is one of the largest plastic producers in the world, and generates millions of tons of plastic waste every year.

On the occasion of TED TALKS India, India’s largest televised socially relevant talk show,  we sensitised people to experience the horrors of plastic, through a unique immersive art installation.

A mixed media art installation made from discarded plastic trash at the entrance to the event. Visitors walked through a dimly lit cavern that evoked an uneasy feeling of being hemmed in by a world crammed with waste. Visitors entered a tunnel created by trash, and to escape they would have to find their way out of the puzzle, increasing the feeling of being overwhelmed.

A specially composed audio track juxtaposed the hollow sound of consumerism with nature's shrill cries of pain. It sparked conversations, got shared on social media, and even celebrities like Chris Anderson and Shah Rukh Khan tweeted about it.

The event attracted visitors from all over the country who took the Planet or Plastic pledge on location. As a direct result of this campaign Disney Star called for a ban on single-use plastics across all their offices.

Thankfully, all the plastic used in the installation has been recycled.
